Color is one of the first things a customer notices and one of the easiest specifications to misunderstand. A Pantone code can describe the direction, but it does not tell a factory how that color should behave on every frame material.
Direct answer: specify the substrate and finish before the color; give the full Pantone reference plus a product or mood reference; approve a material chip before a full frame; then sign one physical master sample for production. Do not approve a bulk color from a phone or laptop image alone.
Why one color looks different on different eyewear materials

A brand color therefore needs a material-specific interpretation. An opaque navy on an injected frame cannot look identical to a translucent navy acetate or a blue mirror lens. The practical objective is a coherent family resemblance, not an impossible instrument reading shared by unrelated substrates.
A six-step color development workflow
- Lock the material and surface. Choose acetate, injection plastic or metal, then state glossy, matte, transparent, translucent, plated or painted. Review our frame material comparison before specifying color.
- Name the reference precisely. Write the Pantone library, number and suffix—never just “dark green.” Add a physical product, fabric swatch or calibrated artwork when brand consistency matters.
- Separate every color zone. Mark the frame front, temples, temple tips, hardware, logo and lenses in the eyewear tech pack. Define whether two parts should match or intentionally contrast.
- Review the cheapest useful sample first. Approve an acetate chip, molded plaque, coating coupon or lens swatch before paying for a complete frame revision.
- Evaluate in controlled conditions. Compare samples against a neutral background under consistent daylight-equivalent lighting, then check them in the retail environment. View translucent parts over both light and dark backgrounds.
- Sign and retain the master. Date and sign the approved frame or swatch; the factory and buyer should each keep a protected reference. This becomes the color authority during production and pre-shipment inspection.
What to put on the color approval sheet
Record the style and component, substrate, Pantone target, finish and gloss level, transparency, approved supplier material or coating, sample version, approval date and photographs. Also describe the allowed visual variation in plain language. For patterned acetate, identify the acceptable distribution of pattern rather than treating every frame as a photographic copy.
Do not use ΔE or another numerical tolerance unless the measuring geometry, instrument, illuminant and sample surface are agreed. A number without a defined method creates false precision, especially on curved, glossy, transparent or metallic parts.
Common color failures and how to prevent them
- Metamerism: two samples match under one light but separate under another. Check at least the intended sales lighting and neutral daylight-equivalent light.
- Part-to-part mismatch: fronts and temples come from different batches or processes. Approve the assembled combination, not isolated parts only.
- Edge and recess coverage: paint or plating looks thin around rims, hinges or welds. Inspect all angles and folded frames.
- Gloss drift: the hue is acceptable but the surface looks too matte or too shiny. Treat gloss as a separate specification.
- Digital-only approval: a photo hides shifts and depends on the camera and screen. Use images for communication, not final release.
Color quality, durability and market compliance
Appearance approval does not prove durability or chemical compliance. Define suitable adhesion, abrasion, perspiration or corrosion checks for the construction and intended use, without assuming that one test fits every frame. Coatings, pigments and substrate materials may also be subject to destination-market chemical, labeling and product-safety rules.
